Changes in temperature have been associated with changes in physical and biological systems  Examples include:

  •  reduction in Arctic sea ice extent and thickness in summer
  • non-polar glacier retreat
  • earlier flowering and longer growing and breeding season for plants and animals in the Northern Hemisphere
  • poleward and upward (altitudinal) migration of plants, birds, fish and insects; earlier spring migration and later departure of birds in the Northern Hemisphere
  • increased incidence of coral bleaching

The Scientific American, February 2008 issue, page 60, has an article on climate change that describes what can happen if global warming continues to raise water levels from melting ice in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Today’s ice sheets rising 19 feet would raise the sea water levels to cover coastal areas on the tip of Florida including Miami. A rise of 170 feet would cover all of Florida and other parts of the US coastal areas. Many other areas in the world would be affected.
